DJI, the world's leading provider of civilian drones and creative camera technology, presented the on 10.10.2023 DJI Zenmuse L2, a highly integrated LiDAR system based on the successful Zenmuse L1 from DJI builds upon itself. With an improved RGB camera, an upgraded LiDAR module, and improved accuracy, any professional user can benefit from a DJI Matrice 300 RTK or DJI Matrice 350 RTKThe platform benefits from more precise, efficient, and reliable 3D data acquisition. Furthermore, in conjunction with... DJI Terra is a turnkey solution for 3D data acquisition and high-precision post-processing.
"That DJI “Zenmuse L2 marks a new era in 3D data capture,” says Christina Zhang, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy at DJI"Three years ago..." DJI We are excited to introduce a reliable and cost-effective LiDAR system for aerial platforms used by surveyors, power inspectors, and forestry professionals, to name just a few. This aerial imagery is crucial for providing real-time 3D data, efficiently capturing details of complex structures, and delivering highly accurate reconstruction models. With our goal of driving industry development across all business verticals, we will continue to address users' challenges through technological innovation and reshape industry productivity.
Higher hardware performance and greater efficiency
LiDAR aerial imaging technology enables professionals in land surveying, mapping, power inspection, forestry, and infrastructure management to quickly obtain large-scale, three-dimensional spatial information. Compared to traditional manual surveying techniques, it can significantly reduce workload, shorten field measurement time, and improve data acquisition efficiency.
The new Zenmuse L2 integrates LiDAR, a proprietary IMU system, a 4/3 CMOS RGB camera, and a three-axis...Gimbal, which is in connection with the DJI-drones Matrice 300 RTK or Matrice 350 RTK enables accurate, efficient and reliable data acquisition.
Ready when you are
The highly precise, in-house developed IMU system has been significantly improved and is ready for use immediately upon power-up, enabling an optimized field experience. Combined with the drone's RTK positioning system for data fusion during post-processing, the Zenmuse L2 gains access to highly accurate, absolute position, velocity, and attitude information.
Furthermore, the improved adaptability of the IMU system to environmental conditions enhances the reliability and precision of operation.
Improved detection range, improved security
The Zenmuse L2 has a 30% increased detection range. Compared to its predecessor, the Zenmuse L1, it detects objects from 250 meters at 10% reflectivity and 100,000 lux, and up to 450 meters at 50% reflectivity and 0,000 lux.[1] The typical operating altitude is now up to 150 meters, which significantly increases operational reliability and efficiency.
With a reduced spot size of 4×12 cm @100m, only one fifth the size of the Zenmuse L1, the Zenmuse L2 not only detects smaller objects with more detail and generates more accurate digital elevation models (DEM), but also supports five returns that are able to penetrate denser vegetation and capture more ground points under the foliage.
In both single and multiple return modes, the Zenmuse L2 can achieve a maximum point cloud emission rate of 240.000 points per second, enabling the capture of more point cloud data within a given timeframe.
The sensor's RGB mapping camera features a 4/3 CMOS sensor with a mechanical shutter and an increased pixel size of 3,3 μm. The effective pixels now reach 20 MP, resulting in a significant improvement in overall image quality and greater detail in the colored point clouds. The minimum capture interval has been reduced to 0,7 seconds, and the mapping camera can be triggered up to 200.000 times, further reducing operating costs. When point cloud capture is not required, the RGB camera can still capture photos and videos or collect images for visible light mapping.
In connection with that DJI-Flagship Matrice The 350 RTK improves operational efficiency, as it allows both LiDAR point cloud and RGB data to be collected from a 2,5 km area in a single flight.[2]
At a typical working height of 150 meters, the Zenmuse L2 3D point cloud model has a height accuracy of 4 cm and a plane accuracy of 5 cm, thus meeting the requirements of high-precision terrain surveying at a scale of 1:500.
Software that gives you control
During operation DJI Pilot 2 uses and supports three display modes – RGB, point cloud and side-by-side point cloud/RGB display – which present the operational results in an intuitive way.
Activating RNG (Laser Rangefinder) enables access to distance information between the LiDAR module and the object in the center of the field of view, increasing flight safety. Four modes for real-time point cloud coloring are also supported: reflectivity, altitude, distance, and RGB. Furthermore, users can quickly preview the recorded 3D point cloud model[3] to monitor work progress in real time.
Our preview of DJI Pilot 2 allows the Zenmuse L2 to automatically generate quality reports on route operations after completing route tasks, including point cloud playback and splicing capabilities. A quick preview of the point cloud results can be viewed on-site, and if the data is abnormal, the acquisitions can be repeated to avoid duplicate missions.
Our preview of DJI Terra enables the Zenmuse L2 to perform efficient and reliable point cloud post-processing from a single source. After the point cloud trajectory has been solved and its accuracy optimized, a 3D point cloud in the standard format can be generated with a single click. The ground point is then classified, and DJI Terra creates the digital elevation model (DEM). Functions for accuracy control and inspection can then be used to analyze the result.
One tool for multiple industries
In combination with the DJI Matrice 300 RTK or DJI Matrice 350 RTK-platform and DJI Terra is the Zenmuse L2 ideal for land surveying, forestry, key asset management and many other scenarios.
In topographic mapping, the Zenmuse L2 can quickly map a large area and helps users to carry out topographic surveys not only quickly, but above all accurately.
After the raw point cloud data has been acquired, it can be automatically processed to generate numerous results, such as 3D point clouds in standard format, DEMs (digital elevation models) that can be used for further measurements.
For forestry professionals, the Zenmuse L2's LiDAR can penetrate the canopy. Features such as crown width and tree height can be analyzed to dynamically monitor plant growth.
In the power monitoring industry, reconstructing lines and components using photogrammetry has always been challenging. The Zenmuse L2 now enables the efficient acquisition of point cloud data. Inspection specialists can also measure the distance between vegetation and power lines to identify potential risks or plan automated inspections based on the point cloud data.
Availability
The DJI Zenmuse L2 will soon be available in the Futuretrends online shop: DJI Zenmuse L2
[1] The data shown are typical values. They were measured on a flat object whose size is larger than the laser beam diameter, at a perpendicular angle of incidence, and with an atmospheric visibility of 23 km. In dimly lit environments, the laser beams can achieve the optimal detection range. If a laser beam hits more than one object, the total laser transmission power is divided, and the achievable range is reduced. The maximum detection range is 500 m.
